Procrastination and Self-Sabotage
Procrastination is not doing the things that you know you want to do. You may set yourself a goal and then find it difficult to take the first step towards achieving it? It may be worth you taking a moment to look at some possible reasons for procrastinating. Is it because you have put your goal to one side and chosen another path? Has your interest waned? Or, when you think about it do you get a nervous feeling in your stomach? Do you want to reach this goal but feel that it is an impossible task? Or, you are worried what people may say – will they be encouraging you to achieve or may they say ‘I have heard that all before’! These thoughts and feelings can stop you from achieving and then you can feel upset and annoyed with yourself.
Self-Sabotaging behaviour is when in attempting to solve or cope with a problem, it instigates new problems and disrupts long-term goals. For example, comfort eating is a common form of self-sabotage when a person has weight concerns. Similarly, self-medicating with drugs or alcohol when not able to cope with problems has become an issue for many people. Interestingly, when it comes to self-sabotage procrastination is the most common behaviour. Procrastination is the gap between intention and action and who is responsible for the width of this gap – you are! These two words are closely linked and to have an awareness of them can assist you to make choices that will help you move forward.
